| Good way to become familiar with vocabHead over heels is a book about a jr girl named Francesca who is going through many teen problems. She is having to deal with the SAT, just like most of the readers are as well. Like any other teen novel, some other problems include romance and deciding which boy to choose. As far as the storyline, it was not the best, you could tell some paragraphs were added here or there just to slide another vocab word in. Though, since this is a book meant to help you with your vocab i gave it 4 stars. I felt that not all the vocab words were used completely correctly but i liked how they were defined along the bottom of the page. This made it easy to understand and it does somewhat leave you hanging at times. I would not recommend this books for boys, unless you are desperate, because it is definitely a chick book. It did help me become familiar with the vocab words, but its not where i can memorize them by reading them once. I also bought Busted and Sun-Kissed by the same spark notes authors to help me become even more familiar with the vocab words. (I have not read them yet but the more examples you hear of a vocab word being used, the more familiar you will become with it.) Considering this is a vocab book, it is an okay storyline, but good to see vocab words used in sentences rather than on a flashcard.

Excellent Vocabulary WorkbookMy daughter and I sat down together to use this workbook and I'm so pleased with the layout. Not only is it topic friendly, using Vocab from a popular novel, but it is user friendly. I would love Brian Leaf to do this with novels my younger kids read, such as Fablehaven.

| Good History, An Engaging Book!I found this book to be a quick and easy read after the first chapter - which for some reason seemed to drag - and I think it would be a good choice for teens or adults wanting a quick introduction to Jamestown.
Originally published in the 1950's (see note at bottom of review), it reads like a more modern book and does not seem dated. This is due most probably to the fact that the author derived much of her information from primary sources rather than 'trendy' secondary analysis. Certainly you can hear echoes of the colonists' words in her descriptions.
In a book like this, particularly one geared for teens and young adults, the problem is usually balancing the production of an interesting story with facts and details. In this case, Ms. Hall-Quest got it right. She didn't burden the reader with too much detail, and one is just as likely to run across fun information like how many piglets were born at such-and-such a time, as a date. Likewise she doesn't engage in extensive discussion of the Virginia Charters, but rather emphasizes the challenges that the community faced, and the personality problems that cropped up. Overall I thought it was intelligently written and engaging.
Rating : Very Good.
Jamestown: The Perilous Adventure good book for teens or adults looking for a quick, easy introduction to the early history of Jamestown. The narrative touches upon the personality problems that figured in the settlements history, which includes both whites and indigenous peoples. There are several useful maps included.
Note: First published in the 1950's the material facts have been updated although it was not clear to me by whom. The preface was written by a gentleman from the National Parks Service, so perhaps the curators at Jamestown double-checked the details.
